Safe in 60: 100 Deadliest Days

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — As we approach summer, we also begin the 100 deadliest days on Utah’s roads.

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, fatal crashes on our roads nearly double. Labor Day and Memorial Day weekends each saw five deaths in 2017.

In fact, 80 percent of crashes happen on clear sunny days with dry roads.

As you go out to explore this summer, here are some things to remember:

• Wear your seatbelt- always! Don’t take it off for even a moment. If you need to reach something in the backseat, ask the driver to pull to the side of the road.

• Drive the speed limit. It’s tempting to drive faster on clear, dry roads. Don’t risk it.

• Obey traffic laws. That includes not plugging up the passing lane.

• Never drink and drive.

• Don’t drive distracted or drowsy. And be mindful – those full days out in the sun will take a toll. You may not realize how tired you are.

• Be patient. A lot of other people will be on the roads with you this summer. Plan for slower traffic, and give yourself plenty of time.

• Pay extra attention on the road. Large profile recreation vehicles can create larger blind spots, and require more stopping distance.

• If you are pulling a trailer or a boat, make sure to double and triple check all your equipment and connections for safety. Check your trailer lights!
