Habitat For Humanity ReStore In Ogden Burglarized Multiple Times

Aug 24, 2018, 11:07 PM | Updated: 11:10 pm

OGDEN, Utah – A thief raided a store, created to support a charitable cause, three times in roughly a week, workers said Friday.

Manager Sherri Jones said the burglaries and thefts at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, 3111 Wall Ave., have totaled well over $3,000 in damage and stolen property.

“We had our table saw extension taken, a table saw, a miter saw, a snow blower, our big rolling magnet and then they punctured, drilled a hole into the truck gas tank and siphoned all the gas out,” Jones said.

The first burglary was detected Aug. 13.

“The second panel is where they had cut the hole and that’s where the snowblower was that they took,” Jones said, pointing to a fence at the south end of the property. “That was time number one that we noticed.”

The second was discovered Aug. 15.

“We noticed there was no lock on it anymore, and the guide to the saw was right there on the ground,” Jones said, noting another area of the fence.

On Tuesday, workers discovered the damage to the box truck’s fuel tank.

“They drilled a hole in the tank and put a tube in it to siphon it out,” Jones said. “They left the (tube) in there hoping we wouldn’t catch it and they could just come back and siphon it over and over.”

Jones said the truck now needs a $2,700 repair.

“It’s a little more than we have or want to spend on something like that,” Jones said.

It was the only truck that was operational and used to pick up donations, according to the manager.

The ReStore sells hardware supplies to help raise money to build homes for those in need.

“It’s hard to take, it’s hard to swallow that we’re trying to help the community and those in need and it’s happening,” Jones said.

Jones said the store was in the process of trying to raise money for the repair of the truck.

She said the thefts had been reported to Ogden Police and encouraged anyone with information in the case to contact that department at 801-395-8221.

“It’s a direct hit to everybody and, you know, we’ll just keep going on like we always do and helping people and doing the best we can do,” Jones said.
