KEARNS, Utah – An armed robbery suspect was shot after a confrontation with police in Kearns.
Sheriff Rosie Rivera tells us the incident started about 1:20 p.m. at the Fiesta Ole on 54th South.
She says the Unified Police Department officers were called to the taco joint because a man with a knife was robbing the restaurant.
She says responding detectives had an idea who the suspect was and tracked him down to a home in the area of 44th West 57th South about 20 minutes later.
We spoke with a man, who doesn’t want to be identified, doing work in the area. He heard what came next.
“Five police officers, four or five cars flew down this street. They got down there. They immediately opened their doors and started running around their cars to the front of the house. And all of a sudden, ‘pop, pop, pop.’ Somebody just got shot.”
At this point, police will only say there was some kind of confrontation and the suspect once again showed a weapon before he was shot.
He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
On Wednesday night, UPD released the name of the robbery suspect, James Lyle Kuehn, 61, of Kearns.
Right now, detectives are looking to see if anyone else was involved.
Sheriff Rivera doesn’t believe the community is in any danger at this point.
