LEHI – Principals are urging parents to keep their sick kids at home to stop the spread of the flu and other viruses at their schools.
Students in the Alpine School District have been hit especially hard with illnesses in the last two weeks.
The Utah County Health Department sent notices to parents of school-aged children warning about widespread flu activity.
Principals are reporting many absences but believe even more students should stay home and recover.
Sam Rencher, principal at Dry Creek Elementary, used an automated phone call to parents to drive that message home. He said 137 children were absent on Monday, more than double the normal number.
Administers said with so many children missing class, it is impacting the learning environment.
On Friday, health officials said 16 people in Salt Lake County had died from the flu this season.
