TAYLORSVILLE — Unified police went undercover to catch a wanted fugitive out of West Valley City Thursday night.
Lt. Bill Robertson with UPD said officers acted quickly when they spotted Charles Williams driving his vehicle in Midvale.
“They recognized the suspect from fleeing from West Valley last week, and at that point we got some more officers in plain clothes to follow the suspect,” Robertson said.
Police said the undercover detectives followed Williams to Taylorsville in hopes of apprehending him.
We were going to try to have him park the car and apprehend him that way, but at a certain point off of 4700 South and Atherton Drive, we deployed spikes,” Robertson said.
Police said when both front tires were deflated, Williams increased his speed, started driving recklessly and ran into a condo off of Atherton Drive and 1175 West.
“At that point he fled to the west. At that point officers took him into custody about 100 yards from where the vehicle hit the building,” Robertson said.
Robertson noted the suspect did not get too far because of a possible broken ankle from the crash.
There was a female passenger inside the car, but police said she was treated for injuries that are not life-threatening. Police said no one was injured inside the condo.
“Obviously, yeah, when you are home in the evening watching TV, having dinner and something like this happens, it’s always a big surprise,” Robertson said. “We are just very fortunate that no pedestrians were out in the area.”
Police said Williams is facing felony fleeing charges from last week, has outstanding warrants for distributing narcotics and is now facing additional charges for Thursday’s incident.
