As tumbleweeds pile high, Eagle Mountain announces disposal plan

EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah – People who have had tumbleweeds take over their yards will soon have a solution in Eagle Mountain.

From April 19 to April 26, people may bring tumbleweeds to a retention basin along Eagle Mountain Boulevard, west of Lake Mountain Road. Unified Fire Authority will dispose of tumbleweeds there through a controlled burn. Residents may also use burn barrels or fire pits to dispose of them between sunrise and sunset on those days.

A posting to the city website instructs people to follow these instructions if they plan to burn tumbleweeds themselves.

“All restriction for recreational burns will be adhered to.

1. 3’ diameter and 2’ flame height.

2. 25’ from any structure or flammable material.

3. State EPA approved green air quality day. (# for the Burn Line to check 801-374-BURN)

4. Ample water supply and/or extinguisher to control any spot fires.”

When a storm blew through the area on Monday, tumbleweeds piled up high outside Darcy Jackson’s house along Prairie Lane.

“I kind of kept watching out the window and it kept getting higher and higher and higher,” Jackson said.

Jackson said the tumbleweeds piled up so high, she could not get out through her front door. Neighbors helped her clear a path, though a large pile remains in her front yard.

“I’ve seen tumbleweeds, but never like this! It’s nuts!” she said.

Several other homes on the streets surrounding Summit Way have tumbleweeds piled up against their doors or gathered under vehicles.

Jackson plans to use a burn barrel to get rid of her tumbleweeds. She hopes to make it a fun event.

“Yeah, I think it’ll be fun to get everybody around, and we’ll just start shoveling them out from the doors and start burning them and invite everybody around us and come roast marshmallows and have some fun,” she said.
