SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Thanks to a new Utah law taking effect this week, where you keep your car registration is now up to you.
Most people we spoke to keep it in one place:
“In the glovebox,” said Troy Hunter. “Where else would you keep it?”
“In my glovebox,” answered Angie Van. “Otherwise, I’d lose it.”
Karen McCabe had the same response. “Where do they want me to keep it?” she asked.
That new law says you no longer have to keep it in your car.
State representative Christine Watkins of Price championed the law, saying there’s a lot of sensitive information on a registration many people would rather not have in their vehicles.
Prior to the law, a fine for not having the registration available for an officer could run $50 to $100, depending on which law enforcement agency pulled you over.
But Utah officers are able to pull up all information they need from their computers in their cruisers, making that document unnecessary.
Both the Salt Lake City Police department and the Utah Highway Patrol told KSL while their officers may still ask for your registration when they pull you over, they can no longer ticket you if you don’t have it.
