PROVO, Utah – With the early summer heat, a lot of people are thinking about heading to the water. And now, it is much easier to enjoy Utah Lake State Park.
For the past couple of years, the marina had to close, because the water was so low boats couldn’t launch or even dock in the state park. But a project to dredge the marina over the past few months, has given new life to it.
“It’s great, starting summer out here in Utah, got to hit the lake to get it all soaked in,” said Carson Dixon.
Getting back on the water for the first time this season is what Dixon and his friends have been waiting for.
“Keep cool, hop in, get some wakeboarding in, listen to some tunes with the friends,” he said.
“If you can’t get out of the marina, you can’t get out on the lake, because we are a foot deeper than the lake,” said Aaron Hone, a ranger at the park.
Hone said he and other park rangers are thrilled with the improvements, which dredged the marina and the channel by four feet.
Crews took care of the work in the late winter and spring, removing 56,000 cubic yards of silt. It was a challenging project that required the water to be pumped out of the marina and into the lake, so crews could dredge the bottom.
“Boaters are able to come out here, they have commented about the deeper channel, how they will have a longer season to come out and boat now,” Hone added.
The marina had been plagued in recent years with low water, which effectively kept the state park closed to boaters at the end of the season. The risk of damaging a propeller or boat had become a real hazard, but not anymore.
Hone says Utah Lake State Park will again provide a great recreational experience.
“We ask all boaters who come out here to wear a life jacket, it is mandatory for all those under 12, and make sure your boat is working properly before you come out, and have a great time and enjoy the state park,” he said.
