Safe in 60: Determining right of way at a 4 way stop

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — For many of us, four way stops can be frustrating and sometimes confusing. Here’s a quick review of how to proceed when you encounter one:

1. The right of way is given to the vehicle arriving at the intersection first.
2. If two vehicles arrive at the same time, the driver on the left has to yield to the driver on the right. A good way to remember is that they have the ‘right’ of way.
3. If two vehicles arrive opposite each other and both are going straight, both vehicles can go simultaneously.
4. If two vehicles arrive at the same time opposite each other, but one is turning left, that vehicle has to yield right of way to the one going straight. Remember: the vehicle turning left ALWAYS has to yield.
5. Stay behind the stop line. If there isn’t a stop line, make sure and stop behind the crosswalk lines. Always allow room for pedestrians to cross.
6. And remember, vehicles must always yield to pedestrians entering an intersection whether marked with a crosswalk or not
