SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Salt Lake City Police said a man was killed when he tried to dart between moving railroad cars at a crossing near 900 South 600 West Saturday evening.
Lieutenant Russ Amott said officers found video that showed a man waiting to cross the tracks as a Union-Pacific train moved through at around 15 miles-per-hour.
“Looks like he was in a hurry, he was kind of timing, watching the train cars go past and just wanted to get through,” Amott said.
Then, Amott said, the man tried to make a move.
“Looks like he just kind of squatted down and tried to roll underneath it,” he said.
Amott said the passing train caught the man as he tried to roll underneath, killing him. They are trying to figure out who the man was. Amott said he did not have any identification on him. As police worked the scene Saturday evening, Amott reminded people to be careful at crossings.
“Don’t ever try to cut a train off, don’t try to beat a train, cross between the cars, even if it’s standing still, because you don’t know when it’s going to move. You don’t know what’s going to happen and it’s just dangerous,” Amott said.
