Firefighters: Tervels Fire One of Series of Arson Fires From Tooele County to Wyoming

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah – Investigators said Tuesday the Tervels Fire is now believed to be part of a larger set of arson fires stretching along I-80 from Tooele County to Wyoming.

“Just talking about the details of the cases and taking notes, it became clear that the fires were related,” said Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands investigator Jason Curry.

Curry said it appears the series of fires started around 12:30 p.m. Monday, along the eastbound lanes of the interstate near the Salt Lake County-Tooele County line.

Five additional fires sparked from there to Summit County over the next hour, Curry said, including the Tervels Fire, which quickly spread to 585 acres.

The Tervels Fire was 25 contained as of Tuesday afternoon, according to firefighters.

“There’s damage to watersheds, air quality impacts,” Curry said. “There are homes on the other side of this fire that were under evacuation threat yesterday.”

Investigators were doing whatever they could to determine who was responsible for the fires, including processing physical evidence found at the fires and checking with businesses and convenience stores along the I-80 corridor for potential clues.

Curry said additional fires were started along I-80 in Wyoming Monday, but did not provide further details.

“It really concerns us when we know where somebody’s actively, intentionally setting fires, and it’s something that we want to get on top of and get them caught.”

Curry once again encouraged anyone who believed they had information related to the arson cases to call the Summit County Sheriff’s Office at 435-615-3600.
