HEBER CITY, Utah – Investigators said they found open alcohol containers in the dump truck that crashed into a pick-up truck along SR 40, killing six people in Wasatch County Friday.
Jamie McKenzie, the man who police say was driving the dump truck, has faced alcohol-related charges before.
According to a probable-cause statement, a Utah Highway Patrol sergeant found an open container of beer and an open container of liquor in the dump truck.
At the hospital, a trooper said McKenzie’s breath smelled of alcohol. He said McKenzie told him he knew he was in a crash, but did not remember the details.
The trooper said McKenzie initially refused a blood-draw, but submitted to one once the trooper got a warrant. The trooper said a doctor diagnosed McKenzie with alcohol intoxication.
After being released from the hospital, McKenzie was arrested for investigation of six counts of automobile homicide and two counts of DUI with serious bodily injury.
A search of court records shows McKenzie has faced other alcohol-related charges in the past. In July, he was cited for having an open container in a vehicle.
In 2013, he pleaded “no contest” to impaired driving and having an open container in a vehicle.
