ROAD TO ZERO
Stay Alert, Stay Alive: Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Trick-or-treating on Halloween is full of fun and fright, but don’t scare away from safety!
The Salt Lake City Police Department is encouraging parents to make sure their trick-or-treaters can be seen.
“I understand some clothing is dark for Halloween,” said SLCPD Sgt. Brandon Shearer. “Make sure you have a light, whether that’s a glow stick or a flashlight or some reflective tape on your costumes.”
Trick-or-treaters also have to remember vehicles are still out and about, and the rules of the road for drivers and pedestrians still apply.
“When you’re crossing the street, use a crosswalk,” Shearer said. “Pretend like cars don’t see you. That’s the safest thing to do all the time. For people out driving during the evening, please drive slowly. Pay attention to what’s going on.”
Officials said each year there’s at least a couple of children in the state who are hit by a vehicle. While they typically don’t result in serious injuries, they are still avoidable.
Finally, as children gather handfuls of tempting treats, they shouldn’t trick themselves into snacking along the way. Remind kids to play it safe and wait until they get home.
“The biggest thing is for parents to just look through their children’s candy,” Shearer said. “Make sure it doesn’t look like anything is tampered with. We haven’t seen a lot of problems with that in the area, but it’s always a good idea to look through their candy and make sure everything looks as if it came from the factory.”
Although it shouldn’t have to be said, adults enjoying Halloween should not drink and drive, especially with little trick-or-treaters around. Police will also have increased enforcement on the roads Halloween night. They’ll be patrolling for anyone driving under the influence.
With drivers and trick-or-treaters keeping safe, everyone will be able to come home happy and healthy after a night of Halloween fun.
