Utah – In Utah‘s 2nd Congressional District, Republican Chris Stewart secured his fourth term with a win against Democratic challenger Shireen Ghorbani. Stewart believed this was the most divisive election in his lifetime. But, it’s up to everyone to change the negative tone of political discourse.
“I’m telling you the American people are tired of it,” said Representative Stewart. “They’re exhausted by it. And, they expect us to do better and we have to do better and it needs to start with some of those very vocal leaders like our President.”
The former Air Force pilot has backed the President on key issues. With Democrats gaining control of the House, he expects to be tempered in his language tomorrow, and expects the same from Democrats.
“Every single person has got to be willing to ask themselves, am I adding to the rhetoric? Am I adding to the emotion and the anger? Or, am I trying to temper that? And, I would ask my president to temper some of his language.“
Stewart said he is proud of the tax reform passed by Congress and the work he’s done on the intelligence committee.
Also, proud of a bipartisan bill to create a three digit national hotline for suicide prevention.
“You’ll have a three digit number, you’ll immediately be able to talk to someone who can help you,” he said. “We have 1-800 numbers, but they’re different state to state, sometimes city to city this will be a number that everyone can remember.“
He said there is still some work to be done by the FCC to establish that specific number before that service is available nationwide.
