WASHINGTON, D.C. – Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams is in Washington, D.C., to prepare for new representatives’ orientation in spite of the race not being called.
The tens of thousands of ballots released Tuesday show there’s now less than one percentage point between McAdams and Republican incumbent Mia Love. Only about 1,200 votes separate the two.
Utah County plans to release additional results Friday, with 27,000 outstanding ballots. In Salt Lake County, there could be as many as 50,000 ballots still waiting to be counted.
Senator-elect Mitt Romney was also in Washington, D.C., today for orientation meetings. The Republican will replace Sen. Orrin Hatch when he retires.
Orientation begins Thursday as new members will learn about budgets, travel limitations and other guidelines.
Romney, 71, will become the first U.S. politician in more than 170 years to serve as governor of one state and senator from another. The last person to do so was Sam Houston, who served as the governor of Tennessee from 1827 – 29 and later became a senator for Texas shortly after it became a state.
