MURRAY, Utah – A house fire in Murray killed a grandmother and her 7-year-old granddaughter Monday.
Officials with the Murray City Fire Department said the blaze sparked at approximately 7:30 a.m. near 700 West and Anderson Avenue.
MCFD Assistant Chief Chad Pascua said the a woman and a man escaped the flames and were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. The two were identified as siblings — the grandmother’s children and the child’s mother and uncle.
“It’s very unfortunate,” Pascua said. “It’s basically a firefighter’s worst nightmare when you have fatalities in a fire.”
He said crews faced a number of challenges battling this house fire, including multiple obstacles inside the home.
“The house had a very hard access,” Pascua said. “It looks like it had an attic and it had been converted into some bedrooms. It also had a lot of property inside the house that gave our firefighters difficulty to access.”
Crews worked late into the morning extinguishing hot spots.
Investigators are working to determine how and where the fire started.
A GoFundMe* has been set up by Globus Relief to help the family.
