SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The University of Utah and Brigham Young University are getting ready for their 99th match-up Saturday night at the Rice-Eccles Stadium for Utah’s favorite rivalry game.
The Utes are on a seven-game winning streak, and life-long Cougars fan Geoff Gentry is like many fans hoping that changes this year.
“None of the seniors on the team have a victory against the U of U,” he said. “That would be really great for them to get one.”
There have been a lot of changes both on and off the field since the last time BYU won: Nov. 22, 2009.
On the field, Kalani Sitake was coaching at Utah during the game. Bronco Mendenhall was still BYU’s Head coach and, not to mention, both BYU and Utah were still in the Mountain West Conference.
President Barack Obama was still in his first year. Meanwhile, Donald Trump was hosting “The Apprentice.”
“Single Ladies,” by Beyoncé, was one of the year’s top hits.
Utah’s population has grown from 2.76 million in the 2010 Census to 3.16 million in 2018.
The Provo Tabernacle burned down in 2010. It was later rebuilt into a temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Mitt Romney secured the Republican nomination for president, but he lost to Obama in 2012.
City Creek in Downtown Salt Lake was finished and opened that same year, and a TRAX line to the airport was completed.
Former Rep. Mia Love was 2-2 in congressional races. She lost in 2012 and then won back-to-back races in 2014 and 2016. She lost again this year to Ben McAdams.
When it comes to football records, Utah’s is 70-42 and BYU’s is 70-46 since 2009.
On a final note, Geoff’s son, JJ, was only 7.
“You have to win for it to be a rivalry again, which is why you hope that we do win,” Gentry said.
