McKay-Dee Hospital Employees Hand Out Free Helmets To Skiers, Snowboarders

HUNTSVILLE, Utah — Nearly 200 skiers and snowboarders received unexpected “tickets” on the slopes of Snowbasin Resort Friday from Intermountain employees. The ticket was actually a voucher for a free helmet from employees of McKay-Dee Hospital.
“We’re just trying to spread awareness of taking care of your head and keeping that head safe in certain activities that we are doing sometimes,” said Logan Parish, an Athletic Trainer with Intermountain Sports Medicine.
Parish was one of nearly two dozen employees spotting and stopping people without helmets.
“We are just trying to decrease their risk of concussion or a head injury,” Parish said. “We’re trying to help them live the healthiest life possible.”
McKay-Dee Hospital administrator, Mike Clark, said this was just one way Intermountain hopes to help prevent brain injuries.
“We can fix a lot of things but the brain doesn’t like to be fixed very well,” Clark said. “Being on the hill can be dangerous sometimes and our heads need to be protected.”
Snowboarder Brock Lierd knows that firsthand.
“I’ve had a concussion snowboarding before. I’ve had friends who’ve had concussions,” he said. “So getting a free helmet is a great opportunity to, you know, stay safe.”
Altogether 175 helmets were given out, along with free ski buffs.
