OGDEN, Utah – Twenty-one minutes after the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Day, a North Salt Lake woman gave birth to the first Utah baby in 2019.
At 5 pounds, 13 ounces, Evolet Ailani Figuerola arrived into the world more than a week early at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.
It wasn’t the New Year’s Eve her parents, Sheryl Lopez and Bryan Figuerola, had planned.
“It was crazy. It was super-fast,” said the stunned new mom, who was scared during the process and while holding her daughter the first time too. “Because it’s just so tiny. It feels like you’re just holding a doll.”
One of the many surprises in store for this new mom.
Evolet’s early and healthy arrival meant family in town from California for the holidays could meet her.
Evolet was an extra special delivery for her doctor, “This is neat because I delivered (Sheryl’s) little sister who is 5-years-old and so the family came back to see me,” said Dr. Mark Housley. “It’s nice to have that connection with the family.”
January 1, 2019 marks a beginning of lots of firsts for this now bigger family.
“She’s just perfect.,” said the admiring new mama who can’t wait to get out of the hospital and back to their home in North Salt Lake.
