SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The funeral for fallen Provo police officer Joseph Shinners will take place Saturday, Provo police announced Monday.
The Provo Police Department said the funeral is slated for 11 a.m. and will be held at the UCCU Event Center at 800 W. University Parkway in Orem.
Shinners, 29, was shot and killed while on duty about 10 p.m. Saturday. He had responded to the Bed Bath and Beyond near 50 W. University Parkway in Orem to try to take a fugitive, later identified as 40-year-old Matthew Frank Hoover, into custody, officials said.
At some point after officers arrived, the shooting occurred, and Shinners was critically injured, officials said Saturday. He was taken to Utah Valley Hospital but died just before midnight.
Shinners, a Boston native, worked for the Provo Police Department for about three years. He was a field training officer, a member of the department’s bicycle patrol and a member of the SWAT team.
He was also a husband and a father to a 1-year-old boy.
Hoover was shot at least once during the altercation and was taken to Utah Valley Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.
There will be a public candle light vigil for Officer Joseph Shinners on Wednesday evening. Community members who wish to hear remembrances from people who knew Officer Shinners may gather at 48. S. 300 W. at https://t.co/sSCjG0CqCk. pic.twitter.com/eCfBOQZuKo
