Heavy Rainfall Brings Damage To Juab County Property

Jan 18, 2019, 10:38 PM | Updated: 10:43 pm

NEPHI, Utah – Like many places in Utah, Nephi got its fair share of rain and snow this week.

Of course, all that water has to go somewhere.

Often, in order for that to happen, something has to give.

Brandy Hundley now knows that about as well as anyone.

“That tree goes to the next door neighbor’s yard,” she said while pointing to a downed tree in her backyard.

Hundley lives in Nephi, and 24 hours after the storm that came through the area, she still can’t believe what happened.

“It just sounded like some banging, which I think was probably the fence,” said Hundley.

She was home with her family Thursday night.

When the banging got louder, she went into her backyard to see what was going on with her fence.

Fence down

“I just thought it was the fence at first that fell,” she said. “Then we came out and looked at it in more detail, and it was the whole cement wall that came down with it.”

The entire cement wall, along with vinyl fencing separating her yard from her neighbors raised backyard, came down.

More damage

Much of the damage fell into her backyard.

It appears so much rain was falling it saturated the ground to the point that it all just gave way.

“I was shocked. I just couldn’t even believe it, and then I was worried about more of their yard falling and I still am,” she said.

Saturated Ground

She’s not alone.

That wall, and fence, stood between a whole row of houses.

“Hers came down first. But it was like three seconds, is all it took,” said Dan Kidd, who lives next door to Hundley. “It’s a mess.”

Kidd is happy no one was hurt, but he’s worried about paying for the damage.

He says a lot of people in the neighborhood are retired on fixed incomes.

“We’re not pointing fingers. We’re just hoping for the best right now,” said Kidd.

Damage

Hundley says her insurance company has already told her the damage isn’t covered because it’s being considered a natural act.

“I’m not sure where we’re going to go from here and how we’re going to get this figured out,” said Hundley. “I’m just hoping sooner rather than later so no more mud slides come down and no more of their yard comes and visits ours.”
