MAGNA, Utah – A man is fighting for his life after being struck by an SUV Wednesday night.
The incident happened at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Main Street near 8950 West, where the vehicle struck a man in his 60s as he was walking across the street. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
There is a crosswalk near the scene, although it is unclear if he was using it at the time of the impact.
A witness told police the man had been waving his hands at the SUV before the collision in an apparent effort to avoid being hit.
“The witness basically saw it right after it happened, ” said Unified Police Department Lt. Bill Robertson. “(She) was driving westbound on Magna Main and stated that she saw somebody putting their hand up and maybe somebody saying, ‘Hey, hang on,’ or, ‘Stop,’ and the accident took place.”
The driver of the vehicle stopped after the collision and was cooperating with officials. Authorities said there were no immediate signs of impairment or that the incident was done with intent.
At this time, the driver is not facing any charges.
The victim’s identity has not been released, though officials said they are familiar with him and know he spends time walking in the area. They believe he lives in an apartment nearby.
Police said there isn’t typically a lot of traffic in the area in the late evening. However, there are usually a lot of people walking.
“At 7:30, it kind of slows down, after rush hour traffic,” Robertson said. “But there’s a lot of pedestrian traffic down here. … You’ve got to be really cognizant of what you’re doing down here.”
Investigators were on scene for hours through the night trying to piece together what happened. The investigation is ongoing, and detectives will be canvassing the area Thursday to see if any businesses have surveillance video that could be used in the investigation.
