SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s office filed charges Friday against a man who was seen asking “are you gay?” before allegedly attacking another man who was recording him.
Carlo Alazo, 22, of Tampa, Florida, was charged with one count of threatening with or using a dangerous weapon, a class A misdemeanor, and two counts of assault, both class B misdemeanors. There were no hate crime charges.
In the video posted online, Alazo can be seen and heard asking Sal Trejo, who was filming, “Are you gay, though?” Trejo responds by saying, “Oh, I am.” Alazo asks again, “Oh, then you’re gay?” As Trejo begins to respond, Alazo swings and the camera goes fuzzy.
According to the District Attorney, Alazo had used a homophobic slur toward Trejo and his group of friends on Feb. 17 in the downtown area of Salt Lake City. Alazo then allegedly assaulted Trejo, “shoved” Trejo’s friend, and then pulled out a knife.
