SANDY, Utah – Police are on the lookout for two alleged burglars after they were caught on camera in two separate incidents.
Sandy City Police said the burglaries were unrelated, though they happened approximately two miles apart.
Surveillance video captured one man in the act as he targeted the laundry room at the Windmill Cove Apartments, 9551 S. Brandy Spring Lane, where police said he cut holes in the sides of the washers and dryers to steal the coins. He’s reportedly done it on three separate occasions.
“I don’t know,” said Kay Curtis, a resident at the Windmill Cove Apartments. “I don’t think there’s that much in there to have to go through all that trouble.”
Sandy Police Sgt. Jason Nielsen said sometimes it’s just about looking for a quick and easy buck.
“It seems this guy is definitely desperate…” he said. “What we have seen in the past is a lot of it is drug-motivated.”
Police said they hope someone will come forward to identify the man and put the laundry room crime spree to an end.
In another part of the city, surveillance video captured a suspected burglar at the Axio Apartments, 8326 S. Durham St., where a number of burglaries have recently occurred.
“He’s going through these apartment complexes and actually hitting up storage areas in this place,” Nielsen said.
Authorities are asking anyone who recognizes either man or has any additional information to call Sandy City Police dispatch at 801-568-7200.
