Winter Conditions Slowing Commute In Parley’s Canyon, I-15

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Nearly the entire state was affected by the wet weather overnight, and some areas are seeing an impact from the storms.

This article will be updated as pertinent information comes in. Refresh for the latest news.

Traffic specialist Haley Smith reported that Parley’s Canyon is experiencing winter conditions on the road. She noted there are several areas in northern Utah that are experiencing stop-and-go congestion.

Northbound lanes on US 91 at mile post 5 are temporarily blocked due to a crash. UDOT is expecting the scene, which is just east of Brigham City in Box Elder County, to be cleared at approximately 8 a.m.

UDOT has also put a restriction on vehicles driving through Sardine Canyon in Cache County. Chains for four-wheel drive are required. The restriction will be in place until 11 a.m.

6:30 a.m.

KSL meteorologist Grant Weyman said Weber County is expected to get even more rain this morning, and a flash flood warning in Washington County will remain in effect until 7:30 a.m.

He noted that the Santa Clara River went above its banks last night, so there’s a potential for dangerous driving conditions.

The National Weather Service tweeted a reminder Wednesday that 12 inches of fast-moving water can carry away a small car. Drivers are strongly advised not to drive through or on flooding roads.

6:10 a.m.

Traffic specialist Haley Smith is reporting that there’s patchy ponding on I-15 in Weber County, especially in the HOV and left lanes. She is advising drivers to stay in the middle lane. She also noted that commuters driving from Logan to Brigham City should expect speed averages of 30 miles per hour due to snow in Sardine Canyon.

6 a.m.

UDOT is reporting multiple crashes on I-15: One northbound at approximately 3300 South in Salt Lake City that has closed two lanes, one southbound just south of 2600 South in Woods Cross, one southbound near Kanarraville, one southbound near Willard, and one northbound approximately one mile south of Nephi.

5:50 a.m.

KSL traffic specialist Haley Smith noted that roads are very slick for the morning commute. Highways are seeing patchy ponding, and Smith said the lanes most likely to be affected are the HOV lanes, the left lane and the right lane.

“Your safest drive lanes are going to be right down the middle of the freeway,” she said. “Reduce that speed.”

5:30 a.m.

Kolob Canyon and Zion National Park remain closed Thursday after heavy rains likely contributed to multiple rock falls. There’s a chance for more rock falls, officials said, so the area will stay closed until the weather improves and the rocks can be safely cleared away.
