SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A man who was recorded throwing what turned out to be sulphuric acid on a pair of children’s faces was sentenced Tuesday.
Jason Keith Summers, 32, of Smithfield, was arrested in June 2018 after he walked onto a neighbor’s property toward a toddler “before throwing a substance on the child.” The substance was later discovered to be acid, according to arresting documents.
I’m at a sentencing today, for Jason Summers, a Cache Valley man, who threw acid at his neighbor’s children. Father of kids says his family has suffered, and that Summers gave up his freedom to drug addiction. @KSL5TV

The boys were 5 and 3 years old at the time. They were taken to the hospital and treated for burns.
“It’s hard for not just us, but our whole family,” said the children’s father, Clayton Coulam. “Our kids were tortured, and it’s hard to relive it. We just ask that the public be sensitive to our situation.”
Summers read an apology in court, and his attorney said drug addiction and mental illness affected his behavior.
Judge Brian Cannell sentenced him to 1 – 15 years in prison.
“Despite obvious physical scarring and emotional trauma, the boys are recovering and getting back to acting like 4- and 6-year-olds,” said Brandon Baxter, the attorney for the victims’ family.
According to a GoFundMe* page set up by a family member, the boys’ hospital costs amounted to more than $24,000.
