Pleasant Grove Police, Fire Get New Home Base

Apr 23, 2019, 9:29 PM

PLEASANT GROVE, Utah — Pleasant Grove dispatchers are on the air, taking 911 calls and sending police and fire to local emergencies. Their dispatch center was moved to the brand new public safety building over the weekend.

Years after outgrowing their police station, Pleasant Grove officers finally have a new facility. Paying for a new public safety building was the center of a bitter debate in the city for years, but now it is finished, it is helping to bring the community together.

“It has been a long time coming, it is fantastic! It is a state of the art building,” said Chief Michael Roberts of the Pleasant Grove Police Department.

When the old police station was built in 1977, Pleasant Grove had just eight officers.  Now there are more than 20.

A sewage leak in the evidence room three and a half years ago made it clear a new police station wasn’t a luxury, but a necessity.

In 2016 voters finally approved a scaled back bond of 9.5 million dollars to fund a new police and fire station.

‘The function and flow of the building so we can do our jobs better, there is room to set up cases and investigate, and our lab and evidence processing,” he added.

The building also features bricks, salvaged from the old recreation center, that was torn down to make room for the fire department.

The new police station was built where the fire house once stood.

The chief believes the new facility will finally help to keep up with the growth the community has experienced in recent decades

“The officers in this department do a great job, whether we are in a state of the art building or a cardboard box, they are going to do their job and make sure the community gets the level of service they deserve,” he said.

The police department will begin the process of moving officers in over the next several days. When they are finished, the existing building will be remodeled for other city departments.
