SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The FDA has issued a fifth recall for the blood pressure medication Losartan, but it will now allow some of the impacted batches to go to market.
USA Today reported that the FDA will allow pharmacies to sell versions of the drug that contain trace amounts of a substance that could cause cancer. The decision was made to prevent a shortage of the critical medication.
Losartan alone is the ninth-most commonly prescribed drug in the country. There are more than 45 million prescriptions of the drug filled every year.
Patients who take the drug are urged to talk with their pharmacists about whether their version of the medication is safe.
