Police: 25 People Hurt In Fight At St. George Residential School

Apr 29, 2019, 12:00 AM | Updated: 1:32 pm

ST. GEORGE, Utah – St. George police, a SWAT team, and other southern Utah agencies responded Sunday to a fight at a residential school.

According to police, a fight broke out at Red Rock Canyon School, 700 E. St. George Blvd., at approximately 8 p.m., and it quickly escalated.

Officials on Monday said a total of 25 people were hurt during the altercation, and five of them had to be transported to the hospital. One of the injured had to have staples in the back of his head.

There were rumors of an active shooter, but police confirmed there were no guns or knives used.

It took authorities about 1 1/2 hours to get the situation under control, and some students were detained.

Red Rock Canyon School is an adolescent residential treatment center for 12- to 18-year-olds, officials said. About 97 students attend the school, and police said it took some time for them to search each room and make sure they got out everyone who was involved.

Five juveniles were arrested, and St. George Police Department public information officer Tiffany Atkin said 12 juveniles could face charges.

Charges could include assault, criminal mischief and inciting a riot.
