SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Some people may have some misconceptions about what telemarketers can and can’t do — and the Do Not Call registry isn’t always a safeguard against unwanted calls.
Here are some of the rules that must be followed when it comes to calling people’s personal lines.
- Political groups, charities and survey takers can call you even if you’re on the Do Not Call list.
- Any telemarketer you’ve done business with in the last 18 months is also allowed to contact you. That means if you call a company to ask a question, they can legally pester you.
- If you request to be put on the company’s internal Do Not Call list, they are required to do so.
- In Utah, telemarketers are not allowed to call you before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. They’re also not allowed to contact you on legal holidays or Sundays.
Consumers are urged to scrutinize any sweepstakes forms or free product offers. If companies are giving you something, they’re typically asking for something as well.
