SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Rep. Chris Stewart and Sen. Mitt Romney are pushing to raise the nationwide legal smoking age.
Stewart introduced a bill Tuesday that would set 21 as the legal age to buy tobacco products. Romney, along with a bipartisan group, introduced a similar bill in the Senate.
Earlier this year, the Utah Legislature voted to gradually raise the legal smoking age in the state from 19 to 21 over the course of two years.
Combating tobacco use by children has been a priority of mine since first taking office. I truly believe that it is an epidemic among our youth. I am confident that this bill will significantly reduce underage tobacco usage and ultimately save lives. https://t.co/IgRHqAFA4d

Raising the federal smoking age to 21 is an important step toward keeping harmful tobacco products out of our children’s hands. Utah was one of the first states to enact such a law and I'm proud to join my colleagues in introducing federal legislation that follows Utah's lead. https://t.co/ZobQM8aCWP
