PROVO, Utah – A man who was shot during a domestic disturbance with a woman Monday night has died.

Provo police said Jeremy Sorensen, 26, was shot twice by another man who tried to intervene when Sorensen was physically fighting with an 18-year-old woman.

Auhorities said they were called to the area of 500 North 200 East after receiving several 911 calls regarding the fight, but before they arrived a passerby pulled over and tried to stop Sorensen. That man then reportedly pulled out a gun and shot Sorensen at least once in the chest.

“Officers found 26-year-old Jeremy Sorensen had been shot twice. Investigators believe Mr. Sorensen and an 18-year-old woman were physically fighting in a driveway when a passerby stopped to intervene in the fight. That person got out of his car and told Sorensen to stop fighting and warned him he would shoot. At some point the man in the vehicle produced a firearm and shot Sorensen twice,” according to a Provo Police Department Facebook post.

Sorensen later died at the hospital.

The woman was taken to the hospital for minor injuries and was later released.

“They were on the ground fighting I mean physically, you can see at the scene there was definitely a traumatic scene left,” said Provo Police spokesperson Sgt. Nisha King. “He (shooter) gave some verbal commands, but Mr. Sorensen was not responsive, and at that point the weapon was produced.”

The Utah County Attorney’s office will decide now if charges will be filed against the shooter.

Sorensen had a criminal history of domestic violence.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or taken video of it to call Provo Police Department’s non-emergency number at 801-852-6210 or email Det. Shade at pshade@provo.org.
