At Least 2 Struck By Lightning In Fillmore During Youth Conference

FILLMORE, Utah – A father and daughter were both struck by lightning at a youth conference at the Territorial Statehouse State Park Museum Thursday evening.

The incident happened at approximately 8 p.m.

Scott Hartley, a bishop with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ 112th Ward, said there were several groups at the conference. They had been playing games throughout the afternoon before the storm rolled in.

“It wasn’t too bad and just all of a sudden, lightning and thunder and then it broke loose,” Hartley said.

Hartley said he was about 100 yards from the father and daughter when they were struck.

“Heard a big crack and a buzz and everybody started scattering,” he said. “We seen some people on the ground and we went down to see what was going on. They took the young lady in the building and we got the gentleman in the little cabin over there out of the rain so they could work on him. County sheriff and the police were here in a heartbeat and they did a great job.”

According to a Facebook post from the Millard County Sheriff’s Office, the girl had a damaged eardrum and first-degree burns. They said her father was given CPR at the scene. He had a pulse but needed artificial respiration in the ambulance. The father regained some consciousness on the flight from Fillmore, according to the post.

There was no further information about their conditions Friday afternoon.
