SUNSET, Utah — A woman critically injured in a crash on northbound I-15 Friday died from their injuries, authorities said Monday.
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Nick Street said Erica Garcia, 35, of Ogden, died at a hospital. Garcia was a passenger in a white passenger car involved in the crash.
Emergency crews responded to a report of a crash on northbound I-15 near the Davis-Weber county line shortly before 10 a.m. Friday. A white passenger car bounced off a wall on the freeway before it broadsided a pickup truck hauling a camper trailer, according to UHP troopers.
Garcia was flown by medical helicopter to a hospital in critical condition, where she later died.
The driver of the white car, whose name and age wasn’t released, was found unconscious and “life-saving measures” were performed at the scene before the person regained consciousness and was transported to a hospital, authorities added. No update was provided on their condition Monday.
It’s unclear what caused the driver of the passenger car to strike the wall, but UHP troopers said on Friday they suspected impairment as a possible factor in the crash.
Street said the crash resulted in the only holiday fatality on Utah highways over the July 4 holiday weekend. There were 23 injury crashes and 193 total crashes on Utah’s highways from Wednesday through Sunday, according to a UHP tweet.
In addition, the agency reported they made 4,908 traffic stops over the span of five days. That included 2,906 speeding violations, 521 seat belt violations and 63 DUI arrests among those stops.
