SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Salt Lake City Police Department released the body cam video from three officers who were at the scene of a shooting that left one dead and an officer hurt.
The officer-involved critical incident happened at the Sunrise Metro Apartments at 580 South 500 West on the afternoon of Monday, July 15.
Police responded to the apartments after building staff called emergency dispatch to report a man being aggressive and making threats.
The man was later identified as 43-year-old Michael Brand. Police said Brand had a criminal history with previous charges for retail theft, intoxication, assault, receiving stolen property and resisting arrest.
Two officers got on the scene at 1:28 p.m. They called for an additional officer from the department’s Crisis Intervention Team to help with any mental health issues.
A case worker went with the three officers to Brand’s door on the third floor of the building.

Shortly after police knocked on the door, body cam video showed Brand burst through the door, holding what looked like a weapon and pointing it at officers.
Police later learned that Brand was brandishing a paint gun.
At least one officer discharged his sidearm, striking Brand, who fell to the ground.
An officer who was on the opposite side of Brand was also struck in the shoulder. That officer was transported to the hospital for treatment and released a few hours later.
Officials said Brand died at the scene.
The officer who discharged his firearm was placed on paid administrative leave, pursuant to station policy.
The other officer remained on leave while recovering from his injuries.
A civilian review board and the police department’s internal affairs were conducting separate investigations.
