Sugar cookie shape can be difficult to nail when they bake. If you’ve made them before, you know you cut out the cookies, bake them, and they come out looking a little shapeless. Heather Smith and Candace Heward are going to help make sure your sugar cookies come out perfectly shaped every single batch! You just need to remember the 3 “T’s” of making sugar cookies: Thickness, Temperature, and Time!
Thickness
First, when you start to make your sugar cookies, make sure you pay attention to how thick you roll your cookie dough. Too thin and you end up with those shapeless pieces. And they can even bake too much causing you to have crunchy sugar cookies instead of the perfect soft light sugar cookies. Roll the dough between two pieces of parchment paper. And even more importantly, try putting a set of rolling pin guide rings on your rolling pin. This will give you the perfect thickness every time!
Temperature
Next, after you have rolled your cookie dough, stick it in either the fridge for about an hour, or even in the freezer for about 25 minutes. This is going to make it so you can get those crisp clean lines when you are cutting your shapes. Then, after you have cut the shapes, put the pre-baked cookies back in the fridge or freezer for about 25 mins. This is where the real magic happens. Since you are cooling down the cookies the butter will not melt as easily, giving you the perfectly shaped soft cookies every time.
Time
Last, when you bake these, the best average bake time is about 9 minutes. You’re looking for a little bit of browning on the surface. If they look under-done don’t worry! They will set up just fine!
