NAUVOO, Ill. — The Angel Moroni statue atop the Nauvoo Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was replaced Tuesday, according to Church officials.
The statue was damaged over the summer when it was struck by lightning and Tuesday’s repair took place during a previously scheduled closure.
According to officials, the fiberglass statues serve as both symbolic landmarks and lightning rods, attracting lightning strikes away from other parts of temples.
Lightning damaged the Angel Moroni statue at the Bountiful Temple in 2016; that statue was replaced with one originally intended for the temple in Meridian, Idaho, which was under construction at the time.
