SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Officials with Unified police issued a warning Sunday about a new scam that is going around and using Sheriff Rosie Rivera’s name.
They said the scam will come in your email inbox and the message will ask if you are available for a phone call or other assistance. If you respond to the email, it sends a request for gift cards, officials said.
“Sheriff Rosie Rivera, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, nor the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake City will call or email asking for money for anyone,” a press release read.
The email address that the scam is using is slco.org and UPDSL.org.
Officials said if you receive an email or phone call from someone claiming to represent their organization and asking you for money, please do not reply to the email.
“Do not under any circumstance purchase gift cards and give the numbers to those cards to anyone calling or emailing you with those instructions,” the press release went on to say.
Police also said that the departments do not utilize gift cards or this method of payment. If you receive one of these emails, contact your local police department to report the scam.
