NORTH LOGAN, Utah – A north Logan man is behind bars Sunday on investigation of murder after his mother was found dead, North Park police say.
Neighbors are still in shock following the incident at the North Point Apartments in Logan Saturday afternoon.
“You never really expect something like that to happen especially in your own family,” said Monty Cruz, a neighbor.
North Park police suspect Shawn Ryan Andrews, 28, stabbed his mother.
Neighbors say they saw Shawn Ryan Andrews around the apartment complex.
A neighbor, DM Sullivan, says Shawn Ryan Andrews was living in the apartment with his brother and thinks his mother may have been visiting, but those details have not been confirmed.
“I never knew them. I only saw them out here smoking their cigarettes. They moved in a few months ago, two to three months ago,” said Sullivan.
Police say they found Debra Ann Andrews, 67, unconscious with at least one stab wound Saturday afternoon around 3 p.m. and were unable to save her.
“His younger brother was the one that was out here grieving,” said Sullivan as he described watching Shawn Ryan Andrew’s brother outside the apartment while police conducted their investigation.
Details and motive are still under investigation, but police said they found evidence leading them to Shawn Ryan Andrews.
He was arrested Saturday and booked into the Cache County Sheriff’s Office Jail where he is being held without bail.
Shawn Ryan Andrews is facing a felony degree murder charge and three counts of second degree felony obstruction of justice.
“He’s not the sort of person that you’d expect to do something like that,” said Marty Cruz, a neighbor who says she had seen Shawn Ryan Andrews around the apartment complex smoking.
Records indicate he has a criminal background including assault charges and a protective order.
In the meantime, neighbors send their prayers to Debra Ann Andrews family.
“I’m so sorry for their loss, I can’t imagine what it would feel like to lose someone that I love,” said Cruz.
