SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – One person died after being hit while crossing the road in the downtown area early Dec. 7.
Salt Lake City Police Lt. Russ Amott said two pedestrians were crossing at the intersection of 300 South and 500 East in the early hours of the morning when they were hit by a vehicle.
The light had turned green for the vehicle, Amott said, and it proceeded through the intersection without stopping for the two pedestrians, who were still in the road.
John Hautau, 40, was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries, authorities said. The other victim remains in critical condition.
The driver, later identified as Justin Taylor Barber Williford, 23, was arrested for suspicion of DUI.
Salt Lake City was experiencing a large amount of fog later that morning, However, Amott said the fog probably wasn’t a factor in the crash.
“The fog, I understand, at the time that the accident happened, it actually wasn’t bad yet,” he said.
Williford was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of DUI.
