ROY, Utah – According to C+R Research, an average of 36% of Americans reported having a package stolen at least once from their front doors in 2019 and officials with the Roy City Police Department are hoping to ward off porch pirates with a few “bait” packages across the city.
Officers posted about the packages on Christmas Eve, warning thieves to think about spending Christmas in jail before nabbing someone else’s package.
Salt Lake City was recently named the second-worst metropolitan area in the U.S. for porch pirates with a theft rate of 27.5 incidents per 1,000 people.
Earlier this month, police in Cedar City arrested two alleged porch pirates and said they found drugs and hundreds of fake IDs and credit cards in a hotel room.
