WEST WENDOVER, Nev. – West Wendover’s first medical and recreational marijuana dispensary officially opened its doors Monday.
The 8 a.m. opening had customers flocking from across state lines to Deep Roots Harvest Dispensary.
“I’ve been having to drive to Dinosaur, Colorado, which is the closest one, until this morning,” said one customer who made the drive from Utah.

A medical marijuana user, he’s now cutting down his regular four hour drive time to Colorado to now just over an hour from Utah, a trip he said is well worth it to treat PTSD and pain stemming from a car crash a few years back.
“I hit my jaw on the window,” he said. “Ever since then my jaw has been wrenching around. I need a surgery but I can’t afford it.”
His doctor gave a recommendation for medical marijuana. He was among those enthusiastic about the dispensary finally opening its doors.
“Exciting day for us, huge victory for the team!” said Mike Martinez, the Deep Roots Harvest manager in West Wendover.
While Nevada passed recreational marijuana almost three years ago, some city officials fought to allow the business in Wendover. Deep Roots Harvest has been waiting for approval from the state’s department of taxation before finally opening.
“Compliance is a very key component here at Deep Roots Harvest,” Martinez said. “We want to make sure we are educating our customers not only on the product they are purchasing, but the rules and regulations set forth by the department of taxation.”
In addition to being the first dispensary in northeastern Nevada, it’s also the closest to Salt Lake City. However, that doesn’t make it legal to take across state lines.
“I don’t drive with it in my system, that’s for sure,” said the Utah customer.
