SANDY, Utah – Little Cottonwood Canyon has closed to traffic so avalanche control crews can work in the area without risk to drivers.
The full north side of Little Cottonwood Canyon closed just before 10 p.m. Wednesday.
The canyon has been closed from Gate B to Grizzly Gulch, and will remain closed until 8 a.m. Thursday.
Officials from the Utah Avalanche Center said the additional snow in the mountains means a greater risk of avalanches.
The New Year’s snow storm created just the sort of conditions in the mountains officials said they look for as they work to keep skiers and drivers safe.
Crews from the Utah Department of Transportation planned to use explosives and artillery to trigger avalanches that threaten roads.
They needed everyone out to ensure the public’s safety.
