COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah – Two women were killed after a wrong-way crash on eastbound Interstate 215’s south belt, according to Sergeant Nick Street with the Utah Highway Patrol.

Street said a woman in her 80s entered I-215 going the wrong way at the 3300 or 3900 South off-ramp.

The woman was driving against traffic for around three or four miles and clipped two vehicles before crashing into another car, troopers said.

The driver of the second vehicle was a woman in her 20s; Street said she died at the scene of the crash.

The wrong-way driver was transported to an area hospital where she later died.

Troopers closed eastbound I-215 lanes near 2000 East and 6200 South through Friday evening to investigate and process the scene. I-215 lanes have since reopened.

“At this time we don’t necessarily expect impairment we will gather the evidence to rule that out, but we believe with the age of the individual that entered the freeway the wrong way in their 80s, it may be a situation where they were confused about how to properly get on the interstate,” Street told KSL TV’s Dan Rascon. “If you are a person that has an elderly relative or friend that still getting behind that wheel that might be at that point that it is a little scary for the rest of us please have that conversation with them it might be for the best.”
