Burglars Use Tools They Find In Habitat For Humanity ReStore To Break Into Safe

Burglars broke into the ReStore in Layton sometime between Jan. 18 - 19 and used tools in the store to break into the safe.
LAYTON, Utah – A Layton nonprofit is scrambling to make repairs after burglars broke into its store and stole nearly $1,100.
The manager for Davis ReStore said it was hit sometime between Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
“They came in through the back,” Manager Matt Alexander said. “Our truck was backed up to the store … and they used it to pry the bottom of the door open. They creased and just bent the door really bad.”
The store not only suffered thousands of dollars in damages, but its safe was broken into as well.
“They pried it open,” Alexander said. “They cut it down here using our own tools.”
“It’s disheartening because we got those tools donated so we could use them to do what we needed to do,” he added.
The nonprofit sells donated items like gently-used furniture, appliances, home goods and building materials. It uses those funds to build Habitat for Humanity homes in Weber and Davis counties.
Alexander said this burglary has set them back about a month on a current build. He is just hoping police find those who did this, and hopes the community steps in by coming into the store to help.
“Come in and shop,” he said. “Help us get on the right path.”
