SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The number of missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been reduced in Liberia over concerns about the availability of adequate supplies.
The decision was made as a result of the economic conditions in the country.
According to Church spokesperson Daniel Woodruff, 23 missionaries from the Liberia Monrovia Mission who were nearing their departure date will return home.
Another eight missionaries who were scheduled to arrive have been reassigned to other missions. Woodruff said the reassignment was temporary. It was not known if the missionaries would eventually go to Liberia.
Woodruff said there were adequate supplies for the remaining 99 missionaries.
“The Church will continue to closely monitor the situation and make adjustments as needed,” said Woodruff. “We pray for the people in Liberia as they navigate the economic situation in their country.”
