SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Weber County authorities are looking for an escaped inmate who they say posed as another man in order to leave the jail.
Police are looking for Kaleb Wiewandt, 40, who was being held on federal charges of bank fraud and identity theft.
According to a statement from the Weber County Sheriff’s Office, Wiewandt shaved his head to look more like a fellow inmate, Matthew Belnap. Wiewandt is also in possession of Belnap’s jail ID card.
Officials said posing as Belnap was how Wiewandt managed to escape the jail at approximately 7 p.m.
“We understand that news of an escape can cause alarm and fear in the community,” according to WCSO’s statement. “We want the community to know that we have called out deputies and are working with the US Marshals to investigate this incident and to locate Kaleb.”
Wiedwandt is from Orange County, California, and officials said they believe he’s headed in that direction.
He’s described as 5 feet, 10 inches tall, and weighs 175 pounds. He has blue eyes and a shaved head and face. He was last seen wearing black pants, a grey long-sleeve shirt, and a black T-shirt over the long-sleeve shirt. He is also in possession of a gray hoodie, according to WCSO.
Anyone who sees Widwandt is asked to contact their local police department.
