Draper Planning Commission Gives Negative Recommendation To Geneva Rock Expansion

DRAPER, Utah — A Geneva Rock expansion plan at the Point of the Mountain drew a large crowd to a planning commission meeting Thursday night, as dozens of neighbors expressed their concerns about the proposal moving forward.

In the end, the proposal received three negative recommendations from the planning commission before it advanced to the city council.

“We got a unanimous on all three counts negative recommendation, which is completely stunning,” said resident Adrian Dibwad.

Under the plan, Geneva Rock had been seeking to have 27 acres rezoned for its mining operation, while designating 64 acres as open space.

During public comment, residents expressed worries about the potential health and environmental impacts, including the dust generation—which they maintained was already bad enough.

“There are days when the dust comes straight over the top there in sheets of dust,” Dibwad said. “You can feel it in your teeth, you see it all over the cars, it’s on the windows—it’s everywhere.”

Others feared that Geneva Rock would ultimately seek to expand further in the future, even if the plan was approved.

Geneva Rock previously attempted to expand its operation at the Point in 2018. At the time, the company was seeking to rezone 73 acres, but it withdrew its proposal after a large public outcry.

The proposal now moves forward with the negative recommendation to the Draper City Council.
