SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah’s three Boy Scouts of America councils will combine and form a single group in April, officials said.
The new organization will be known as the Crossroads of the West Council, beginning April 2. It will be composed of the Trapper Trails Council, Great Salt Lake Council and Utah National Parks Council.
“While this will be a large shift at a council administrative level, we want to assure you that this will not affect Scouting at a local unit level,” said Tim Fenton, council president. “Our highest priority is ensuring that normal unit meetings, advancement, and leadership growth of our young men and women are not negatively impacted.”
Officials said hours and locations for current scouting offices and shops will remain the same.
The announcement came almost one month after Scouts BSA filed for bankruptcy and almost a year after The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced it would end its long-standing relationship with the group at the end of 2019.
Local officials said they are legally separate and financially independent of the national organization.
“These changes will make the delivery of our programs in these communities more efficient and — more importantly — sustainable,” officials said in a Q&A. “We look forward to expanding our reach in the Utah community.”
