SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – All Costco members and guests will be required to wear face coverings beginning May 4, according to a statement from the company.
The face masks must cover the nose and mouth at all times while shoppers are in the warehouses.
According to Costco, the requirement does not apply to children younger than 2 or to individuals who are unable to wear a mask or face covering due to a medical condition.
“The use of a mask or face covering should not be seen as a substitute for social distancing,” according to the statement. “Please continue to observe rules regarding appropriate distancing while on Costco premises.”
The company also announced that regular operating hours at warehouses and gas stations will return to normal on May 4, with special operating hours from 9 – 10 a.m. Monday – Friday for members who are 60 or older and for people with disabilities.
“Only members who meet this criteria will be able to shop during these hours,” the company said in a statement. “Guests will not be admitted.”
Other restrictions will remain in place temporarily. Costco will continue its policy of allowing only two people to enter warehouses on a single membership card. Priority access will also continue to be given to Costco members who are health care workers and first responders.
The announcements come as Utah is set to begin reopening some businesses – such as gyms, salons and some dine-in restaurants – on May 1.
